Yesterday, Amit Gupta had a great suggestion to include thumbnails on Video posts in the Dashboard:
I love Tumblr, but I almost never watch the videos people post. But I click on photos to see the bigger version all the time.
Video posts could really use a still frame to give you a peek at what’s inside.
Anyone else feel this way?
We were already doing this with videos uploaded to Tumblr. Now we’ll also show thumbnails next to YouTube videos.
Thanks, Amit!
Now testing: Direct video uploads
Over the next few hours, we’ll be rolling out crazy simple native video uploading to all accounts. This is designed to be an easy alternative to full-blown video sites when all you want to do is post a quick video to your blog.
Just a few notes:
- You can upload up to 5 minutes of video every day. You can break this up across as many videos as you damn well please.
- Tumblr will immediately post most H.264-MP4-AAC videos without transcoding! That means no waiting and no quality loss. Photo Booth videos and iMovie’s “Export to iPod/iPhone” work great.
- If you’re looking to post longer videos, customize your player, or host HD videos, you’ll be much better off with a feature-rich video tool such as Vimeo.
Enjoy!

One of my favorite things Blackbook has done with Tumblr is crowd source interview questions using the Answers feature.
Foster, Blackbook’s Assistant Editor and Tumblr Ringleader, interviewed the French band Air for the magazine last week, and opened up the interview to the Tumblr community. He got amazing questions— from nedhepburn’s “Given the vast differences between each album do u make music for yrselves or to keep yr audience guessing?” (we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume the “yr” is due to the character limit) to realish’s “What do you think of the recent mainstream success of fellow Frenchmen Phoenix?”
The best part? Blackbook reported back the next day and promised that whatever questions he used would be credited in Blackbook. How refreshingly ethical!
Yesterday, they held a music trivia contest to give away swag to their Tumblr followers.
Today, I got an email from Foster announcing that Blackbook had passed me in Tumblarity. :(
Good game, gentlemen.
